Week 16: Wednesday

Ok, so!  The first clandestine meeting of the Underground Cooking Club will be next Wednesday.  The administration hasn't really given an answer, and I think it's time we got started.  Post here with a recipe if you're interested, and when we get together next week, we can decide as a group what we want to cook.  If we want to make it a proper club, we can even have a secretary or historian or something to keep all the recipes we cook in our own Cooking Club recipe book.  Anyway, we'll meet next week at 7 in the kitchen.  Please post below!  ^_^

Why not start with dinner?

Face it, the first meeting will be too full of confusion and tittle-tattle to leave much room for cookery. Few of have ever cooked together—present company excluded—and nobody knows the level of the other—again, note the exception—so there’s bound to be a lot of wariness and vanity. So why not have everybody bring a taste of something handmade as a gesture of goodwill? For those who don’t cook but want to learn, well, they can bring an example of what they’d like to learn making or just bring their appetites.

Ooo, good point. Perhaps everyone should post what they will be bringing so we don't have a bunch of, say, salad-types, and one entree. And, if you're not up for cooking, perhaps you could bring a drink? That way, it will be a true potluck.

Thank you, Sasha!

The drink option is a nice alternative, I agree. But you know it seems a pity to stick to ordinary motions with this idea. Anyone can cook alone, after all, and clubs are dime a dozen; why not take a stab at brewing up something weird and wonderful?

Have you ever heard of underground restaurants? They’re eateries operated by people how love food out of their own homes and apartments. Usually this cloak-and-dagger dining aims to offer something not available in “legitimate” restaurants. The advertising works by word of mouth, bypassing the glitz and focusing on the food and fun of it. They keep odd hours and mercurial menus. They’re basically illegal, generally provincial, and, frankly, fabulous.

Now I’m not suggesting you try to galvanize Halcyon’s kitchen adventurers into starting a restaurant outright, but wouldn’t it be interesting to taste test the philosophy featured above? It wouldn’t be just a cooking club, it’s be an opportunity for anyone who loves food.

Sometimes it pays to have eyes bigger than one’s stomach.

Ooo, that would be awesome. We could start that after the first meeting you think? Then we could set up the menu for the next time and such. We could take turns posting the menu. And that would really make sure that those who wanted to learn to cook would get a chance. They could work their way up from prep to cook. And we could take turns, too, if it came down to it. And I still think a scrapbook or something would be cool. We should also come up with a name.

We wouldn't be able to do much until we have a skeleton crew at least. And, yes, anyone wanting and willing to learn would be quite welcome to try their hand at it. The best thing is that we could recruit eaters as well as cooks.

Scrapbooks are out of my range, so I'll settle for wishing you good luck.

Kind of a bummer? But I just got an e-mail from admin, and we have permission. =P I was kinda looking forward to something all secret and clandestine. But! We can still do the restaurant thing. I think it will be fun.

Hmm.

Let me ask you this: how odd are you willing to be to have a little gourmand fun?

Um, rather odd? What do you have in mind?

You want secrecy, I want a challenge, and everyone deserves a taste of something different.

So.

Start building the club. Recruit, outline, advertise—whatever. But at the same time throw out a challenge to the cooks and eaters of Halcyon. Midnight wine tastings, sugar banquets in the basement, tango teas, faux funeral feasts, oh, there are a million bizarre possibilities. Twine springs of rosemary around doorknobs to serve as invitations. Spike the cafeteria ketchup. Raid the garden for flower jam stock. Build a gingerbread doghouse.

We could be the Dinner Dare guild.

Ooo, that would be awesome! Let's leave it up to the club once it gets going. But I think doing events like that would be awesome fun. ^_^ You're very creative!

Good luck!

If you mean, people who enjoy eating what we cook, of course. ^_^ You're... taste-testers! And learners. *evil grin*

Like Sasha suggested, I think it would be a good idea if we did a potluck. If you don't want to cook (which would be a crime for you!), you can bring a drink.
